Having the ability to not only communicate but to communicate effectively is a life skill some people desire to have but struggle to execute in everyday life. Every day—as students, future leaders, entrepreneurs, public figures, teachers, athletes, or in any occupation you pursue—we are required to use language to express views, provide information, and share ideas.
I surveyed my English class on October 10th with this question: “do you get really nervous to present a speech or presentation in front of the class?” 47% of my peers answered yes.
The easiest solution to this problem is to encourage more students to take the Public Speaking half-year elective. The only way you become better at something is through repetition and practice. Exposure to a period dedicated to public speaking every day is allowing me to practice writing pieces, memorizing, and presenting. After being in the class for less than two months so far, I have been exposed to different situations requiring me to practice and critique others on public speaking while being in a challenging yet comfortable environment.
