The 2020 Presidential Election is less than a week away, and with it, the crux of environmental justice is once again up in the air. Since the September 29th primary presidential debate, featuring the incumbent Republican nominee Donald Trump, and Democratic nominee Joe Biden, America has been hearing the most about climate change than it has in the history of presidential campaigning, with it being a primary topic of discussion during both debates for the first time. But how can we ensure that politicians are held accountable for their statements and proceed with climate change legislation? Involvement.
As a part of the Sunrise Movement, I have joined hands with a legion of young people who fight for climate justice and engage in civil activism to promote candidates who support climate action and take steps toward a Green New Deal. While championing democracy, we educate people on political issues, engage our communities in environmental concerns, and work to achieve change that promises a bright future for all. The Sunrise West Chester Hub is an inclusive group open to and strengthened by public support. With community comes power, and we harness that power in a nonviolent way to take initiative.
On November 3rd (Election Day), we will be hosting a Voter Tripling Event in town outside of local polling spots. If you’re worried about the election and want to help extend voter turnout, please consider joining us! Sign up here:
We will also be having a nonviolent protest shortly after the election with the primary message being about the climate, urging the victor to take climate change (among other issues) seriously. More details on this action coming soon. Follow @sunrisewestchesterpa on Instagram for updates!
