Stressed? Take a music class!

Madison O’Malley

The benefits of music are endless. Improved memory, stronger hand-eye coordination, and even better problem-solving skills, and those are just a few! So why aren’t music classes required? Gym classes are required in schools and we know why. They improve our fitness, self-discipline, and can even reduce stress. With those many benefits, we can say that gym class is a great addition to the school day, and every student should be required to take it. So why is music not a required class when there are several benefits backing it too?

High school students often feel overwhelmed and stressed with the many homework and class assignments they have to complete on an almost daily basis. Music has been shown to boost your mood and reduce stress levels, which could greatly help students with high stress levels due to school. Music is an extremely creative way to express emotions that might be hard to deal with otherwise, which makes it an amazing coping mechanism if needed. That 45 minute period where students can let loose, relax, and create music would provide a much-needed mental break from the busy and fast-paced world we have been conditioned to as high schoolers.

With the mental and physical benefits of playing an instrument, singing, or just taking a music class in general, it is clear that any and all music classes are a great choice for someone looking to reap the benefits of an open period in their schedule. Plus, there are plenty of options to choose from, ranging from instruments to music theory courses. That is why I believe, as a current high school student who is taking a music class, that these types of classes are very valuable to any student’s schedule.
