Theodore DeReese Pendergrass, also known as Teddy Pendergrass, is an R&B singer born and raised in Philadelphia. In the beginning of his music career, Pendergrass was the lead singer of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. He left the group in 1976 and dove into a solo career. Pendergrass went on to release five consecutive platinum albums, which was a record for any African American R&B artist. Teddys most popular song, “Love T.K.O” has over sixteen million spotify streams, deeming him a classic singer and songwriter. Unfortunately in 1982, Teddy faced a car crash, ultimately leaving him paralyzed and halting his career. Teddy Pendergrass died of respiratory failure in 2010, but his name lives on as one of the most successful artists from Philadelphia, if not of all time.
